From static SOP to interactive training for an Ontario food-distribution client

Example of a post-resource audit quick-win project. Duration: 1 week.

BEFORE

2-page text-only hygiene & health SOP:

  • 7 numbered sections

  • no images

  • no way to confirm it was read

AFTER

4-lesson interactive course — the same 6-step hand-washing procedure and personal-conduct rules, now with:

  • narration

  • an interactive facility diagram

  • a graded sequencing activity

  • 3 graded knowledge checks

Why it applies here

Testing effect / retrieval practice

(Adesope, Trevisan & Sundararajan, meta-analysis, 118 studies, Review of Educational Research, 2017)

Learning outcomes when learners take a practice test on material vs. simply re-reading/restudying it.

Practice testing outperformed restudying, moderate effect (g ≈ 0.5), and outperformed no-activity control by a larger margin.

The original SOP has zero self-testing; the course adds 3 graded knowledge-check questions and a graded drag-and-drop activity — exactly the kind of retrieval practice this research measures.

Online food-safety education effectiveness

(Systematic review + random-effects meta-analysis, 12 studies, journal Foods, MDPI, 2024)

Pre- vs. post-training knowledge gains from online food-safety education programs, broken out by learner population

Medium overall effect (Hedges' g = 0.58 across all populations); g = 0.38 specifically for food-industry workers

Results of research in the same industry (food safety), the same population (food handlers/QA staff), and the same delivery shift (text/in-person → online course) as this redesign.

Next case study in production —
WHMIS eLearning module, publishing September 2026.

Aviation training pilot — in scoping.
